When working with fluorescent lights that are flickering, how do you know if the ballast or the bulbs are bad?
Most of the time, flickering fluorescents are an indication of a tube nearing failure. If there is a blackening of the tube near the “hot” end, it’s time to replace the bulb. However, if you hear humming in the fixture, chances are the ballast is going bad and should be replaced. Replace old magnetic ballasts with newer, more energy efficient electronic ballasts and if you’re using t-12′s in the fixture you can now use t-8′s.
